While in the area recently, I toured the University of California, Davis. A few takeaways from my visit:
- Located about 30 minutes from the Sacramento airport, UC Davis is a flat, bike-friendly campus with lots of open, grassy areas for student gatherings. It’s probably best not to tour in the middle of a heat wave (temps were 100+ on tour day, ugh), but you can’t let weather factor too heavily into your campus tour experience, right? As a few students told us, the heat is generally unique to the summer and only lasts a short period of time after fall quarter starts.
- UC Davis’s roots in agriculture are strong and reflected in its course offerings. Some unique classes highlighted on the tour included a tractor-driving class (highly recommended by our tour guide), a wine-making class, and a coffee appreciation class.
- There is a strong focus on sustainability on campus, with majors offered in Sustainable Environmental Design, Environmental Toxicology, Environmental Policy Analysis and Planning, and Agriculture and Environmental Education. Proximity to the California state capital, Sacramento, makes internships in policy a great possibility for students.
- I had heard that the town of Davis is a great college town, and very accessible, however, I had no idea just how accessible it is. Davis’s downtown area is right across the street from campus, with a welcoming, student-friendly vibe. Next time I visit I'd love to be there on a Davis Farmer's Market Day.
