Some notes on another recent campus visit: California Polytechnic, San Luis Obispo (aka Cal Poly).
While not the only polytechnic campus in the California State system (Pomona and Humboldt are also included), this is the school people are referring to when you hear Cal Poly.
Unlike my last visit to campus during COVID lockdown, I was able to attend an information session led by a member of the Admissions team. Campus tours were not available due to Thanksgiving break, but like UCSB, we were able to substitute with a fairly extensive self-guided tour.
The info session focused primarily on academics including what to take in high school to qualify for admission and what academics look like once enrolled at Cal Poly. The campus has an “upside down, blended curriculum” where you dive into your major coursework on day 1 of freshman year. This “Learn by Doing” approach is reflected in the majors offered where you’ll see hands-on choices in the sciences, engineering, architecture, business, and agriculture.

Good luck to students applying to Cal Poly for Fall 2024. Keep checking your portal for updates on admissions decisions (usually posted in mid-March though sometimes earlier).
I help students and their families achieve balance and confidence throughout the college admission process as they discover and apply to colleges that best reflect their personal, academic and financial needs and goals.
