My latest read, “Who Gets In and Why: A Year Inside College Admissions”, is journalist Jeffrey Selingo’s account of an inside look into the admissions offices of Davidson College, University of Washington, and Emory University.
Along the way, Selingo reveals insight into concepts in college admissions (and ones parents often find quite confusing) such as early decision/early action programs, financial aid practices, institutional priorities (remember this: it’s not you, it’s them!), and why some colleges are “buyers” and others are “sellers” in the admissions process.
Selingo provides solid, down-to-earth guidance for high school students and their families, including a detailed Appendix of his tips for getting in after years of studying the process. One of my favorite quotes: “There are many things you can do to increase your chances - which this book discusses - but it’s important to know that the baffling process you face is ultimately not a judgement about you or your potential”. YES!
