Next up on my Spring Break in Washington DC college tours: George Washington University.
A few take-aways from my campus visit:
- George Washington seems like a great choice for a student who is ultimately interested in an urban campus experience but would like to ease into that experience. The university offers 2 campuses - the main campus in the Foggy Bottom area of DC and the second, “Mount Vernon” campus, located in the Foxhall neighborhood of DC. Mount Vernon houses many freshmen and is intended to give more of a traditional campus feel. Students can easily travel the short distance between campuses (3 miles) using campus shuttles. Our tour guide raved about how Mount Vernon helped her transition to urban campus life.
- Like Georgetown, GW would be a strong fit for a student who wants to build their resume while in college. Opportunities abound in the surrounding DC area for students, especially for those students interested in politics, government, or international business.
- I was particularly impressed with GW’s science and engineering facilities. We toured several buildings with modern-looking equipment and labs. While the school may not seem like an obvious choice for these academic areas, I’m going to encourage my engineering students to look deeper into their offerings, especially students interested in the intersection of government and the sciences.
