My first stop on a recent Oregon college tour was at Reed College located in Portland. Reed came on my radar last year when one of my students applied, was accepted, and eagerly enrolled the following spring. I was so impressed when she received a hand-written note from the Admissions Director congratulating her and complimenting her application essay. (Proving once again how much college essays matter!)
As a small, liberal arts college of 1400 students, Reed is dedicated to making its students feel academically engaged, challenged, and supported. A senior thesis on a topic of the student’s choice is an integral part of the student experience. Reed students call themselves “Reedies” and thrive in the culture the college creates, including calling their professors by their first names.
If Reed is on your student's list, I highly recommend taking an in-person visit to get a good sense of the campus and student body vibe. Our tour guide was from Vermont and loved Reed’s small, New England college-feel tucked away in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.
